Andy Wirth’s California Drought Interview

Everyone in California is concerned with the current and long term changes that will come if the drought continues for much longer.

One of the industries that is taking a hard hit is the tourism industry, and KCRW’s Madeleine Brand of Press Play with Madeleine Brand invited the CEO of Squaw Valley Ski Holding out in Olympic Valley to speak about how their company is coping.

The interview covered everything from how the resort was dealing with the drought now, whether they were experiencing a drop in guests, how they were able to still attract guests, and how they plan to sustain their business if the drought were to continue for years.

 

One of the aspects that Andy Wirth was able to touch on in great detail was the resorts ability to see itself through a long term drought if necessary. The confidence behind this statement had to do with the resorts work to adopt the latest technological advances in order to create and reproduce the snow and conditions necessary to attract vacationers.

The other aspect that the resort has worked on, and where Andy Wirth has proven his business skill, was in creating alternate streams of revenue.

By adding additional types of recreation in addition to slopes for skiing means that it can cater to a wide variety of tourists that come to the valley, or are looking at the area for the first time.

Businessman Andy Wirth has a long history of working within the tourism industry, and is now the CEO of Alpine Meadows of Tahoe and Squaw Valley Ski Corporation.

In the past he has served on the board of other tourism based businesses, as a marketing chief, worked in acquisitions, and also done sales work.

All of these positions have led to Wirth gaining the insight and knowledge that is necessary to be a successful leader of the companies that he is now in charge of.
